How did Santa become such a big part of Christmas?

Most of as kids grew up with Santa being a big part of Christmas, we even encourage our children to believe in Santa to when it comes to gifts given on this holiday. Well it started with Saint Nicolas and how it was told in the west of a man that brought gifts to all the children of the world the night before Christmas. We have all be told many different stories about Santa as kids and we even tell our children the same stories that we were told. As it is often told he would give children that were on his nice list presents and coal to the children that were on the naughty list. What this meant to all kids was that if they were good all year they could expect gifts on Christmas morning. We all know supposedly happens to the kids that were not good according to the stories. But according to legend Santa was called by different names to Father Christmas and Saint Nicolas.

Some of the stories tell of a jolly old man with a white beard dressed in a red suit and driving a sleigh pulled by reindeer carrying gifts for little boy an d girls all over the world. Somehow he managed to deliver presents all in one night, which sounds really amazing. Most people that talk about Santa wonder if he was a real person.
